The Hangover Part 2 vs. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) - (Possible Spoilers)

Well it must be a fateful thing that I write an article which involves a movie at around the same time a good friend of mine (and movie buff) Yogesh Raut points me in the direction of his movie themed podcast which can be found here so I thought I'd get that shoutout in there early.

Anyway this post compares the recent comedy movie sequel 'The Hangover: Part 2' and the cult adult themed N64 game, Conker's Bad Fur Day which have a surprising number of similarities which I will highlight for no other reason than because I feel like it, so deal with it. The biggest general parallel I can draw is between the basic premise of both storylines is that the hero(es) must deal with the aftermath of a night of excess in which they wake up with nought but a sore head and have to deal with unfamiliar territory and the most bizarre collection of life challenges. The biggest difference is that Conker isn't responsible for a lot of the harm that comes his way during his hangover whilst the Hangover guys bring it all upon themselves. The get out for the Hangover crew is that they were 'drugged' in both movies so they aren't morally responsible for the stuff they do whereas Conker is entirely to blame for his drunken antics but the entire reason for his problems is that the evil Panther king wants Conker to be the fourth leg of his milk table. So far so good.

The Hangover Part II: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Explicit] [+Digital Booklet]
Oh those crazy Hangover boys... whatever will they do next!?
And then both stories begin by slowly escalating events and find the protagonists getting to grips with their surroundings. The Hangover crew gradually find out the extent of how much they have 'fucked up' the wedding/life of one of the main characters whilst Conker gets to grips with a hilarious tutorial level where an alcoholic scarecrow called Birdy helps him find a cure for his hangover which then allows the player to move more freely and not be sick regularly in game. I'd definitely say Hangover pips the opening with more impact than CBFD simply because the shit hits the fan from the get go.

Conker's Bad Fur Day
This game cost £60 RRP when it first came out... can you believe that?
However the Hangover: Part 2 quickly peters out in terms of the funnies. Especially since it is a frame by frame reproduction of the first movie in terms of plot save for a few niggly differences. You can virtually map the two movies to each other scene by scene. Whereas the movie sees our hapless hungover gang go through a tedious detective gauntlet in which they slowly unravel the mad stuff that they did the night before and suffer some mildly funny consequences which will give them a clue as where they should go next, Conker is more rewarding in that the script is better, the characters are funnier. Also, rather than try and stick wrap mediocre gags around a continuous narrative such as in the Hangover, CBFD doesn't even try and justify the transition from world to world. One minute you are in a Saving Private Ryan spoof, the next you are raiding Dracula's Castle. Just because. Trying to add logic to the mix would just spoil things and developer Rare did the right thing by not even trying. Good on them.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

Both Hangover movies and CBFD feature a musical interlude at some point but points go to CBFD for the Great Mighty Poo's Song for the best of the bunch. Other odd similarities between all three is that at some point during events our heroes need to somehow raise quite a bit of cash and expend a lot of effort and time in doing so, only to have it not really matter in the end as an even larger amount of cash falls into their laps out of nowhere. Both stories have a complete deus ex machina ending simply because everything just gets too silly to resolve the initial problem in a satisfying way.

The differences are key then. Both Hangover movies feature Mike Tyson, and they use him to good effect. CBFD does not feature Mike Tyson but ultimately CFBD's story does not have a happy ending, which to me is payback for Conker's excesses and teaches people not to glorify getting smashed off their faces whereas annoyingly in both the Hangover movies, everybody largely gets off scot free from any kind of real responsibility for their actions, which I don't necessarily think is satisfying. I know they were meant to be 'drugged' but I think that is more of an excuse plot than anything else. Conker's Bad Fur Day forever.

P.S. Try typing swears into the cheats menu in Conker's Bad Fur Day. Easter Egg.
